Wilburn Wins Special Election for the Iowa House

August 8, 2019

Ross Wilburn (D-Ames), a former Iowa City mayor, won a special election for Iowa House District 46 on Tuesday. Wilburn, who works for Iowa State University and was a 2018 Democratic gubernatorial candidate, will replace Lisa Heddens (D-Ames) in the House. She resigned her seat in June after she was appointed to serve on the Story County Board of Supervisors. The district has a large Democrat party registration advantage, and the Republican party did not field a candidate in this race. The outcome of the election does not change the makeup of the House as Republicans will continue to maintain control of the lower chamber 53-47.
