Civil rights and temporary disability expansion considered
February 5, 2015
Members of a House Labor Subcommittee met Wednesday to discuss House File 116, which expands civil rights employment protections to adoptive parents. The language in the bill also seeks to classify adoption as a temporary disability. Subcommittee chairman Rep. Joel Fry (R-Osceola) expressed his interested to keep the bill moving. He did express concern with the temporary disability portion of the language. Fry is willing to look at other places in Iowa Code to put adoption protection. Fry and Rep. Sharon Steckman (D-Mason City) signed the report. Business owner and first year Rep. Steve Holt (R-Denison) chose not to sign the report expressing concerns about adding a mandate to small business.
