ABI Sends Letter to City of Waterloo

October 16, 2019

On Monday, Ryan Koopmans of ABI member firm BelinMcCormick sent a letter on ABI’s behalf to Waterloo City Council members stating the association’s concerns with the newly enacted, wide-sweeping Ban the Box ordinance. ABI has members in all 99 counties across the state, and we worked hard in 2017 to pass preemption legislation. The legislation ensures that cities and counties cannot implement a patchwork of employment policies. ABI will continue to monitor this issue and update ABI members in Waterloo and around the state as to any developments on the policy.

Gov. Reynolds announced this week the formation of a Working Group on Criminal Justice Reform. The goal of the initiative is to reduce recidivism by eliminating barriers to successful re-entry. The group, which will be led by Lt. Gov. Gregg, will create legislative proposals for the 2020 session aimed at advancing second chances.

Also as mentioned in last week's newsletter, the first of two Employer and Reentry Breakfast Roundtables will be held at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville on Nov. 6 at 8 a.m.
