Miller-Meeks Considers 2nd District Congressional Bid

July 18, 2019

First-term State Senator Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Ottumwa) announced Monday she is exploring a run for the Republican nomination for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District. Miller-Meeks, an ophthalmologist and a former director of the Department of Public Health, made the announcement in a letter she wrote to Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann, where she submitted her resignation from the state central committee.

Should Miller-Meeks officially decide to run, this will be her fourth campaign for Congress as she was previously a three-time GOP nominee against retiring Congressman Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa City). Former Illinois Congressman Bobby Schilling, who recently moved to Iowa, is currently the only Republican running in the race. The eventual Republican nominee will likely be taking on former Democratic state senator and 2018 lieutenant governor nominee Rita Hart (D-Wheatland) in the general election next year.
