Federal Spotlight: U.S. House passes fast-track trade legislation

June 18, 2015

The U.S. House today narrowly passed Trade Promotion Authority legislation, commonly known as TPA or fast track, this morning by a vote of 218-208. The authority allows President Obama greater ability to negotiate trade deals, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership currently under consideration.

ABI and many members have joined other business and state government leaders in advocating for this legislation, which will help expand trade opportunities for Iowa businesses. The state exported more than $12.8 billion in products last year and small businesses account for more than 82 percent of Iowa’s exporters, according to the National Association of Manufacturers.

We appreciate the support from U.S. Reps. Rod Blum (IA-01), David Young (IA-03) and Steve King (IA-04) who voted in favor of the legislation.
